“Cape 2 Cape – Aids Awareness Expedition 2008” in Cape Town |
01 December 2008 In due time for World AIDS Day on December 1st, the “Cape 2 Cape – Aids Awareness Expedition 2008” arrives in Cape Town. A total of 24,000 kilometres of Europe and Africa lie behind us. On the one hand, we are chuffed about the numerous experiences that we have experienced together. On the other hand, we leave each other’s company with heavy hearts. |

And finally… |
28 November 2008 We’re nearly there: the last decampment towards a mountain-climb on our long journey from cape2cape: At 7am prompt, we are ready to take on the final stage of our cape2cape tour. We are particularly chuffed that we are not alone: employees from KYOCERA South Africa want to support us at this final summit. |

The end is nearly upon us |
26 November 2008 Not for the first time, it was time to mobilise our forces, as the 3,482 metre Thabana Ntleyana in Lesotho lies ahead of us. The end of our cape2cape tour is slowly approaching.
At the crack of dawn, we start for the peak, with our pickup. Quite a few locals look at us, with an unbelieving expression on their faces.

If you love your bike… |
24 November 2008 Nathie, our mountain guide on-site, is not playing with a full deck. No-one had ever before attempted to reach the 1,863 metre-high summit of Emlembe in Swaziland on a bike.

It’s getting wet! |
21 November 2008 The rainforest in Mozambique lives up to its very name. It drizzles relentlessly – massive drops fall from the ferns, the treetops and the knee-high grass. As if all of this wasn’t enough, we must jump over brooks and streams from stone to stone – and he who misses his landing, gets soaking wet!

KYOCERA Printer steals the show |
18 November 2008 We find ourselves in the middle of Africa on the way to the 13th peak of this year’s AIDS awareness campaign. In particular, the KYOCERA printer, that has been with us all the way is causing a bit of a sensation as some people here have never seen an image of themselves. Above all, the children are incredibly excited about seeing their first photos on paper.

We can almost touch the sky |
07 November 2008 It was a tough job, but the taste of success makes it all worth while. Early this morning, at 7 o’clock to be precise, we stand 5896 metres up on the Uhuru peak, and unfurl the banner with the estimated unknown number of unknown HIV and AIDS cases in Tanzania (1.6 Million). Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest mountain – is under our belt.

Equipment check instead of mountain climb |
01 November 2008 The tour has brought its first victim: Our shock absorbers are faulty, and whilst we wait at the depot, we use the time to check our equipment. The KYOCERA printer has survived the shaking and stirring, the sand and the dust, with no signs of any damage.

New Continent – New Adventure |
26 October 2008 Egypt – the first day in Africa. In the small hours of the night we land in Cairo. The temperatures climb to over 30 degrees on this typical Egyptian autumn day. But as soon as dusk is upon us and then sun disappears beyond the horizon, it gets pretty chilly. |

Farewell Europe |
24 October 2008 This is our last day on the European continent. What’s more, today’s stage is ‘only’ a visit to the Vatican – we have time to have a quick count-up. |

Face to face with Mont Blanc |
19 October 2008 We did it! At 6am we crawl out of our sleeping bags to greet to the ice-cold morning. Over dangerous glacial crevasses and snow-plains we track our way to the makeshift summit of Mont Blanc.

A demanding double-header |
17 October 2008 The peaks of Dufour and Mont Blanc are not only the highest, but the most demanding summits so far. Therefore, our ascents begin simultaneously. |

Our fifth day target lay 3798 metres up! |
16 October 2008 Today’s goal is 3798 metres above our heads, and, up to now, the highest point of our expedition. Despite this, we are confident that we can take on Grossglockner. Even the KYOCERA FS-C5105N colour printer, that accompanies us, has mastered all of the exertions of our rigorous test so far.

06 October 2008 Finally, we were off. From now, our success depended on whether our month-long preparations and our intensive planning would pay off and whether we could attribute the “Cape 2 Cape – Aids Awareness Expedition 2008” to the achievements of the previous year. If the atmosphere amongst the team had anything to do with it, we would have nothing to worry about. |
